"Drugs and electric shock therapy are still the best way to treat depression, a paper in the Lancet medical journal says today, rejecting NHS guidance that people do better and are safer on talking therapies."

Do I even need to comment on this?

Regardless of whether or not medication and electroshock therapy are safe and effective, how have they managed to completely forget the fact that most people with mental health problems have serious underlying Issues that can't be medicated or zapped away, no matter how much we wish that they could? :p

I'm more pro- than anti- medication; as with all things, you need to weigh the benefits against the risks and decide whether or not they're right for you, and in many cases they are a big help, but seriously, to say that I ought to choose them over therapy...

I'm not anti-medication, but I am very much against electric shock therapy - the only reason it has any effect is because euphoria and personality change are a standard feature of brain damage.

Drugs and ECT tend to be cheaper that talking therapies. At least in the short term. Unfortunatly they never think about the long term.
