Have acquired some daylight bulbs, and a couple of cheap desk lamps to put them in.

Why is it so hard to get lamps with bayonet fittings these days?

Local haberdasher's - Franklin's. They had a bewildering array of bulbs, but no actual fittings that weren't either totally overspecified, or a total ripoff, or both.

I'm also beginning to think I shouldn't have given in to my normal instinct that anything less than 100W isn't worth bothering with.

The only problem is that when I move into another room, it feels like walking into some dim yellow cave. Which is, I suppose, -technically- true.
