Very good food (nice rare beefburger, good strong Roquefort, milkshake made with Mackie's ice cream), but very rude service. I may have been dining on my own and had brought a book to read while waiting for my food to arrive, but that's no excuse to bring me the bill without asking, especially since there were several empty tables.

The bill was presented with a shot glass of M&Ms, which I didn't touch; very pretty, but really, really not what I wanted after a strong-flavoured meal and a very creamy milkshake. The traditional mints would have gone down well, though.

Ooh!
Ooh!
I used to help Ms Mackie (daughter of Mr Mackie) when she was doing her PHD. I used to analyse her soil samples.

I hate how when you are on your own in a restaurant you get less than good service. This is par in the U.S. too. In restaurants I would go in a lot in Kentucky (read: so people knew me) I used to try to leave large tips a few times so the regular waitstaff would be clear I wasn't going to stiff them in the future. Plus, I used to buy a couple of beers or glass of wine, which usually raises the tip. Made a difference in only the rarest cases.

Unfortunately, it's a self-reinforcing behaviour pattern for them - especially since I've no intention whatsoever of going back there, even when I return to Edinburgh, which probably won't be till next year, and consequently didn't leave any tip at all. I'd been planning on it, despite the casual treatment I got till then, but not waiting to be asked for the bill just wiped out their chances of one.

This may be an American thing -- I like getting the bill because then I'm not in the awkward social situation of tracking them down and asking for it if I'm really ready to take off -- but I appreciate the, "please feel free to take your time; I'm just leaving this for when you're ready."
