A bandwagon worth the joining, for once.
Jun. 1st, 2004 03:14 pmI was bullied from nine or ten, and while the physical aspect stopped after sixteen or so, social pressures never stopped till I left university. I still don't respond well at all to agressive people, people who are overly sure of themselves, or people who think violence means anything.
A while back, I had to help out at a secondary school memorial service for a fifteen-year-old girl who had killed herself because she was bullied. Her friends were really upset, and cried their eyes out (not that I didn't), but I couldn't help wondering whether they'd noticed what was happening earlier, or simply didn't realise what they were doing.
Some of what bullies do is insecurity, some showing off how tough they are, some simply because they don't realise that what they're doing is harmful. Some are actively malicious and simply enjoy hurting people.
Quote from I don't know who (Michael Moore? Elizabeth Wurtzel? Suggestions?): Somewhere out there, there are an awful lot of people who actively dig other peoples' pain.
I will not stand for this
