Are you planning on coming to my convention? (http://www.constitution-con.org.uk/) I may have a programming request or two if so.

(Also I should talk to you at some point about Eastercon panels, but I'll do that after my con is over ;-)

I wanted to, but I looked at it and the travel/accomodation cost would be too much for me, unfortunately.

What Eddings book/series would you recommend to someone who has (shamefully) listened to the bashing and not yet tried reading him?

I'd suggest starting with Pawn of Prophecy, his first fantasy novel and the first in the Belgariad series. There are five of those (and they do follow on rapidly from each other), then five of the Malloreon in the same world. They're all in print, so finding them in the library shouldn't be a problem.

No problem at all - I'd be interested to hear your reactions if you do give it a try.

I've just ordered it from the library (the wonders of modern technology!), so I'll let you know.

I picked up that one, Revenge, and is Born from Fantasy Centre on my farewell visit on Thursday.

I wasn't aware of David Eddings' death. =( He had a good long run of things, but it's still sad. His books made a big impression on me, and I reread the Elenium at least once a year.

The post about placenames really resonates with me - this is a subject on which I have reasonable knowledge and boundless opinions, and on which I've written in the past.

FWIW, I believe 'Yr Wyddfa' means 'the cairn' or similar, and refers to the heap-of-rocks appearance of the summit.

That's interesting to know; I'll have to try hunting an etymology based on that.
