Like a lot of us, I have friends directly under Hurricane Ike - evacuating from staying put in Houston, and battened down in Fort Worth. The projections look like Houston's going to get hit by the western eye wall, more or less, and Fort Worth is likely to get severely battered by the rest of it. Ike's already done quite a few things he shouldn't have according to our normal understanding (hurricanes never get that far into the western Gulf) so we have NFI just what's going to happen. Even more so than normal.

For comparison, Katrina was a baby who'd just got hold of the good china. Ike is a 300lb farmer with a drunk on, and the bartender is taking down the whisky bottles.

Fairly good analogy, that. Ike is an abnormally large Cat 2 that's likely to be a Cat 3 by the time it hits, and it's bringing a larger than expected water swell with it that has already hit Galvaston. The eye of Ike is still 165 miles south-east of Galvaston.

Aaaaaaaaaigh. I have several friends in Houston too. I wish they'd just leave. They're all able to, but all refusing for various reasons. Merf.

Dammit. :-(

Your friends - and indeed the people of Houston and Fort Worth generally - are in my thoughts. Really, really hoping this turns out to be less bad than is feared.
