The Large Hadron Collider, at CERN, will be switched on for its first beam at approximately 0930 CET (0730 GMT, 0830 London time, other times around the globe) and the world will not end.

This is quite historic; it is (as far as I know) the first occasion on which it has been definitively, authoritatively, and scientifically proven that this will not be the case. There's even a risk assessment (PDF link).

So I suggest we endeavour to celebrate it by consuming items topologically identical to the LHC - eg., ring doughnuts, iced ring biscuits, onion rings, bagels, &c. - around that time. Suggestions of other suitable food items are welcome.

Pass it on.

It's a shame that cheerios are made by evil Nestlé, otherwise they'd be the perfect breakfast cereal! Ring doughnuts are a bit rich for that time of the morning.

I might bake some ring biscuits though.

Oh, good idea. And the Heretics will doubtless eat the polo holes.

That's one hell of a breakfast, really.

It should be noted that this is just producing the beams. The world and potentially universe destroying first collisions, which is when the science starts arriving, will be a few weeks later. So enjoy those bagels while you can!

Good point! We'll clearly just have to keep doing it for the rest of the universe's lifespan.

Am I the only one who doesn't believe the given dates, and thinks that in fact they've already thrown the switch and found the universe hasn't come to an end, therefor they can now say 'We're going to do it tonight and the universe will not come to an end! Huzzah!'

Just wondering.

It's tempting, but the idea of these people being organised and competent enough to keep a secret that big is a bit implausible to me. After all, they're scientists...

Ahh, so there's a reason I woke up this morning craving a bagel! All is explained! Excellent.

Unless it's working in reverse now, and instead of destroying the universe the LHC is slowly and inexorably making everyone crave toroidal food objects.

I'm certainly currently craving the sesame seed bagels you can get at Richmond station with smoked salmon and cream cheese. Even though I'm not hungry.

To be fair, I always *do* crave those bagels though. ;-)

You must someday come to the States with me, and I will introduce you to real bagels. British bagels are depressing, even the best of them.

That sounds like an excellent plan to me.

There is something slightly overly dense about the bagels I've had. I sometimes find them quite hard to eat unless I'm very hungry.

I welcome the toroidal craze! Perhaps it will inspire people to make new, topologically exciting foodstuffs. Clearly we should have more of those.

Insert "My food is problematic" Firefly quote here.

Here it is. :-)

(Was introducing [livejournal.com profile] kateqp to Firefly tonight. She wasn't entirely sure after the first two episodes, but I then showed her Shindig and then Jaynestown and she was far more won over. :-) )

Remember, we have another opportunity to save the universe with tasty bagels when the first actual collisions happen!

I expect every Livejournaller to do his, her, or its duty then.
