Meritocracy has some merits, but the "punishment for stupidity is death" principle is ridiculous. As you say, it's fetishised by people who deliberately forget or otherwise ignore every mistake *they've* ever made, and who like to be able to ridicule anyone who doesn't meet their standards of perfection.
