Steampunked iPods
Of all the things that could possibly be steampunkéd, an iPod (or iPhone, iPad, iWhatever) is either the least appropriate ever or the most appropriate ever.

I dislike "steampunking" when it is being used to mean "attaching useless fannydangle". I approve when it's clever re-workings or additions. iPods don't need reworking on the surface as the hardware works fine, and since my biggest complaint about them is an inability to display full track lists without clicking through, I don't see how that could be improved by being "steampunk'd".
I quite like living in the future, all things considered.

It would be amusing to devise a rendering mask or texture that played movies as if represented by a simplified repertoire of moving shapes that might be provided by an analogue system of steam-driven gears: that would be the converse of a 'steampunk' iPhone, and rather fun.

Nick and I were just watching Labyrinth. THERE IS A STEAM-POWERED GIANT ROBOT IN IT! I had forgotten that. *That's* good steampunk. :-)

There was an Eye-pod in the Oxford Steampunk exhibit. Mostly, it was a normal ipod all dressed up with a giant eye and colors and things.
